  Susan Porter
   
  Susan Porter is on the faculty of the museum studies program at the Harvard Extension School and a scholar at Brandeis University’s Women’s Studies Research Center. In addition to editing Women of the Commonwealth, Work, Family, and Social Change in 19th-Century Massachusetts (1996) and co-authoring Becoming American Jews: Temple Israel of Boston (2009), she has published articles on orphans, adoption, and working-class youths in the nineteenth-century. Her forthcoming book is entitled Engendering Benevolence, Orphan Asylums in Antebellum America.
