Susan O'Donovan
  SUSAN O'DONOVAN is associate professor of History and African & African American Studies at Harvard. She specializes in slavery and emancipation and is the author of Becoming Free in the Cotton South (2007) and co-editor of Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation. Her current work focuses on slaves in the era of sectional crisis, and explores the ways in which they developed and deployed what is popularly known as the “grapevine telegraph.”
