SEMINAR PROFILE

H12 -
Calling By Name: A Poetry Workshop

This two-day poetry craft class and seminar will focus on questions related to allusions and other references in poems. Books, movies, songs, places, historical figures, people of contemporary prominence, you name it--we'll talk about how and why poets incorporate references with which they expect their readers to be familiar, as well as how and why poets utilize references that are more obscure or opaque. We'll read and discuss the work of established contemporary poets, and we will also read and discuss participants' original creative work, exploring themes and urgencies and making collaborative suggestions for revision. Writing prompts will be distributed in advance, and each participant will bring one original poem to share each day.
