H05 - 
Poetry and the Developing Child
   
  This two-day seminar will focus on reading and writing poetry with children in grades K-6, including the delights and techniques of poetry and connections to areas of study or interests such as: the environment, (earth, sky and sea), animals, weather, family and friends, cultures, personal change, and other science and social studies curricula. We will explore a wealth of poetry books, representing many voices of adult and child poets, and ways to share those poems through reading, acting out, drawing, and poetry responses. Through specific lessons, we will explore ways to practice poetry techniques such as: sense images, simile, personification, metaphor, alliteration, assonance, rhyme, and others that delight. Expressing inner feelings through images of the outer world, expanding vocabulary and figurative language, developing an ear for the delights of rhythm and authentic voice, and an awareness of poems' shape on the page will help all students enjoy, comprehend, respond to, and write poetry.
