SEMINAR PROFILE

H06 -
African American Literature: Poetry and Short Stories

African American literature encompasses all literary genres, but poetry and short stories may provide the most flexibility for K-12 teachers who want to bring the literature into their classrooms. In this two-day seminar, we will discuss in depth a selection of poems by a range of poets from Phillis Wheatley to Lucille Clifton and Clarence Major and several short stories by authors from Victor Sejour to John Edgar Wideman and Octavia Butler. We will practice close-reading and analysis and develop strategies for teaching these texts.
