Why is Algebra Hard and What Can We Do About It?

Algebraic is essential for success in college. Yet many students do not become fluent with algebra, making it difficult for students' to successfully study science or economics at college. We will analyze what makes them struggle and how we might address the problem. Central to our discussion will be the idea of algebraic structure. Common misconceptions about functions, expressions, equations, and equivalence will give us a window into student thinking. The seminar will give participants the opportunity to construct questions that probe student understanding.
