Poetry Across Cultures
Expand your knowledge of contemporary poets and discover who has contributed to the diverse poetry America offers today. In this seminar, we will explore selected works by major American poets including Gwendolyn Brooks, Martin Espada, Li-Young Lee, Naomi Shihab Nye, Linda Hogan, Yusef Komunyakaa, Kevin Young, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. Essays and interviews illuminate how these poets draw on past traditions of poetry. We will try various approaches to reading and interpreting poems, and writing exercises related to the essential themes that cross cultures: yearning, love and loss, identity, family, sense of place, social justice, and the natural world. You will come away with extensive materials for classroom units and a new comfort and familiarity with the stunning poems of our time.
