TEACHERS as SCHOLARS: 1996-Present

TEACHERS as SCHOLARS® was founded by Henry Bolter out of the conviction that although teachers are passionate about ideas and learning, content was being sorely neglected by current professional development offerings. With the support of the HGSE, the program was launched in 1996 in 10 school districts for 200 teachers. Since its inaugural year TEACHERS as SCHOLARS has grown tremendously, and currently offers approximately 1000 teachers, from 52 school districts and schools in and around Boston, over 100 seminars in math and science, humanities, and the arts.

Briefly, TAS offers K-12 private and public school teachers content based seminars led by university scholars to discuss scholarly issues and topics with their colleagues. The seminars are held between 9-3 during the teachers' work week at Harvard Hillel in Harvard Square. Some seminars also take place at Tufts University, Wellesley College, MIT, Harvard University and other education related institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The seminars are self-selected by the teachers and no product is required at the completion of the seminar. Participants receive Professional Development Points which are mandated by the Massachusetts State Department of Education to meet recertification requirements.

In March, 2000 TEACHERS as SCHOLARS incorporated as Teachers as Scholars, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization.
