  Tom Kelly
   
  TOM KELLY has been Professor of Music at Harvard University since 1994 and chair of the Department of Music from 1999 to 2004. Previously he directed the program in Historical Performance at the Oberlin Conservatory, where he also served as acting dean. He has been active in national and international associations for the support and encouragement of the performance of music according to historical principles. His research interest is in medieval chant, where he has identified and published an important repertory of pre-Gregorian chant from southern Italy. His book The Beneventan Chant (Cambridge University Press) was awarded the Otto Kinkeldey award of the American Musicological Society for 1989. He is the author of First Nights: Five Musical Premieres, named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and of First Nights at the Opera.
