  THE MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY is the single most important repository of historical of the precolonial and colonial era. WILLIAM FOWLER, is Director of the Massachusetts Historical Society and co-editor of The New England Quarterly. Formerly a Professor of History at Northeastern University, he has taught courses in American History, the History of Boston, Maritime History and the History of New England. He also teaches at Mystic Seaport Museum and has lectured for the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Naval War College and the Sea Education Association. He is a trustee of The Ralph Waldo Emerson Association, The Paul Revere Memorial Association, and the USS Constitution Museum Foundation, and the author of a number of books relating to American history.
