  CHERYL NIXON is Associate Chair and Associate Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She makes rare books libraries her classroom, investigating how working with primary literary sources transforms teaching and learning. One of her courses recently culminated in Crooks, Rogues & Maids Less Than Virtuous: Books in the Streets of 18th-Century London, a rare books exhibition at the Boston Public Library. Her publications, such as the forthcoming book Novel Definitions, focus on the invention of the English novel. Having taught middle and high school students, she oversees the “Teaching of Literature” internship program at UMass Boston.
